The Clem Jones Centre for Ageing Dementia Research (CJCADR), based at the Queensland Brain Institute at The University of Queensland, is a multidisciplinary research centre established to address the growing health and economic burden of dementia.

Founded through philanthropic, state and federal support, the Centre builds national research capacity and advances Australia's contribution to dementia research.

The Centre undertakes integrated research spanning fundamental discovery through to translational application. Its research is driven by the principle that a detailed understanding of disease mechanisms is essential to enable the development of effective interventions. This includes the development of novel therapeutic approaches, improved diagnostic tools and biomarkers, and new research technologies to better understand pathological processes.

  • The Centre comprises 10 research group leaders, each leading multidisciplinary teams with specialised expertise, collectively supporting integrated research across discovery, translation and clinical application.

Achievements of the centre

  • Establishment of an integrated discovery-to-translation pipeline progressing multiple therapeutic, diagnostic and device-based innovations towards clinical application and commercialisation pathways.
  • Discovery that non-invasive ultrasound therapy can reduce amyloid plaques and restore memory in preclinical Alzheimer's disease models, supporting development of novel therapeutic approaches.
  • Identification that specific exercise regimes stimulate hippocampal neurogenesis in ageing models, improving learning and supporting translation to interventions targeting cognitive decline in older populations.
  • Discovery that free fatty acids play a critical role in memory acquisition, highlighting new metabolic pathways and potential therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease.
