The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) develops and delivers solutions to ensure the resources industry is safe, healthy, and rewarding for workers.
Our multidisciplinary team provides applied research, consulting, world-class education and professional development. We collaborate with industry, regulators and the wider university community to improve the management of risk, safety, and occupational health.
Areas of expertise include risk and critical control management, process and systems safety, the human aspects of automation, emergency responses, the application of advanced technologies and worker psychology, fatigue and stress.

Lead researchers
- Professor Maureen Hassall: expertise in industrial risk management, safety engineering and human factors, works closely with industry and delivers training and education programs.
- Professor Robin Burgess-Limerick: experienced human factors and ergonomics researcher and consultant. He has published more than 100 refereed publications.
- Professor Marcus Cattani: expertise in managing exposure to workplace hazards and modeling safety data and information to improve the communication of risk.
- Dr Nikky LaBranche: expertise in the characterisation of dust exposures and its relation to occupational lung diseases.
- Dr Nikodem Rybak: expertise in solutions for risk management, predictive analytics as well as natural language processing and advance data visualisation methods.

- UQ researchers use Field Emission Gun microscopes to reveal invisible dust hazards
- UQ experts delivered mine safety and sustainability training across Latin America
- Commissioned report for the Queensland Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health on fatigue management.
- Siginficant funding from the Queensland Government for research into dust lung diseases.
- Development of a suite of health, safety and risk courses and masterclasses to increase specialist knowledge.
