Overview

The Queensland Water Modelling Network (QWMN) brought together government, industry, research organisations and water practitioners to strengthen Queensland's capacity to model and manage surface water, groundwater and water quality.

Working across research, development, innovation and capability building, the Network supported collaboration, knowledge sharing and the application of water modelling to inform planning, policy and natural resource management.

Objectives

The QWMN sought to:

  • build a state-wide network with national influence to deliver transformative change
  • foster integrated and scalable modelling to address water risks and opportunities
  • champion a community of practice to leverage expertise
  • encourage strategic co-investment and co-production in water modelling research, development and innovation
  • increase the application of water modelling to inform decision-making.

Key partners

The Queensland Water Modelling Network connected organisations and individuals across the water modelling pipeline, linking model development, application and decision-making.

The Network brought together three broad partner groups:

  • model practitioners – government, research and industry specialists who develop, apply and improve water models
  • end users – policy-makers, planners, water managers, community organisations and investment programs that use modelling outputs to support decisions and management outcomes
  • enabling organisations – universities, research institutions and capability providers that support research, innovation, workforce development and knowledge exchange.

By connecting these groups, the QWMN helped strengthen the pathway from modelling science to practical water management and decision-making.
