The Townsville Institute of Health Research and Innovation (TIHRI) leads research across Townsville Hospital and Health Service, improving health outcomes through discoveries in medicine, nursing, midwifery and allied health.

Research has delivered advances in peripheral vascular disease, trauma care, emergency medicine, radiation therapy and maternal, perinatal and neonatal health, particularly for First Nations women and infants.

TIHRI has established a growing multispecialty clinical trials program, providing patients with access to innovative therapies, while supporting telehealth-enabled models of care, strengthening First Nations research capacity, improving diagnostic stewardship, and moving toward translating evidence into everyday clinical practice.

Achievements of the centre

• Establishment of Queensland Research Centre for Peripheral Vascular Disease
• Development of the Audit, Quality and Innovation Review (AQUIRE) program, providing a structured pathway for staff to progress from quality improvement and audit into formal research.
• Establishment of a multispecialty Clinical Trials Unit delivering ethically-governed, sponsor-supported trials across a growing range of specialties. Securing major national competitive funding to connect First Nations research and research translation
• Hosting the annual Townsville Research Symposium and Research Translation challenge to showcase and translate regional research
