Gallipoli Medical Research is an independent medical research institute based at Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane. Building on the site's rich military and repatriation heritage, GMR has earned a strong reputation in Australia and internationally for delivering innovative research that improves lives.

Our work focuses on enhancing the health and wellbeing of veterans, their families and the wider Australian community through research that translates into real-world impact. We lead nationally significant programs in veteran health, liver disease and liver cancer, respiratory health, and clinical trials.

As an agile research institute, we collaborate with leading researchers, universities, healthcare providers and industry partners across Australia and globally to turn knowledge into action and develop solutions to complex health challenges.

Lead researchers

  • Professor Darrell Crawford, GMR Director of Research—a respected hepatologist with 25 years' experience in liver disease, iron overload disorders and viral hepatitis.
  • Professor Rachel Thomson, Head of Bronchiectasis & Mycobacterial Disease Research, is internationally recognised for her work in lung disease and NTM research and treatment.
  • Dr Camila Guindalini, Director of Mental Health Research, specialises in psychiatric and translational research, including PTSD, ADHD and bipolar disorder.
  • Dr Laura G. Carrascosa, Director of Health Translation and Strategic Partnerships, has 20 years' experience advancing health innovation, research development and strategic collaborations.
  • Sashika Naidoo, Associate Director of Clinical Trials, brings more than 14 years' experience in clinical trials, compliance, ethics and quality systems.

Achievements of the centre

  • Military to Civilian transition and reintegration research, leading to world-first psychosocial tools (cited in the Royal Commission into Veteran Suicide).
  • Saliva-based RAT test for fatty liver disease and liver fibrosis (clinical validation underway)
  • 229 clinical trials delivered, 585 participants
  • 290 peer-reviewed publications across veteran biopsychosocial health, veteran and family transition, liver disease research, chronic lung disease research and clinical trials
  • 9,000+ patients supported through our evidence-based Cancer Wellness Program
