CIEHF pursues better outcomes for Land and Sea Country by bringing Indigenous and Western knowledges together to understand the long-term histories and near-term futures of Australia. Our Centre is a collaboration between 29 organisations, bringing together Australia’s leading researchers and research organisations across diverse fields.

The Centre’s research program brings together cutting-edge techniques from Indigenous knowledge, Indigenous science, archaeology, history, ecology, palaeoecology, palaeoclimatology, mathematics, high-performance computing, remote sensing, and genomics. This pursuit is underpinned by an unwavering commitment to respectful, authentic co-designed research with Indigenous partners.

Lead researchers

  • Distinguished Professor Sean Ulm is highly regarded for his coordination of large-scale, multidisciplinary projects in partnership with Indigenous communities investigating people-environment relationships across Australia
  • Distinguished Professor Michael Bird is a specialist in terrestrial carbon cycle, biochar, geoarchaeology and understanding the trajectory of past and future environmental change in the tropics
  • Professor Martin Nakata OAM is the DVC Indigenous Education & Strategy is a global leader in Indigenous Education. He the first Torres Strait Islander to obtain a doctoral degree.
  • Professor Darren Crayn is the Director of the Australian Tropical Herbarium and is an expert in plant taxonomy, evolution and systematics.
  • Associate Professor Felecia Watkin-Lui is an expert in contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history, governance and education.
