The Cairns Hospital (CHHHS) has participated in research and clinical trials since the early 1990’s translating high quality research into patient care, with many research projects providing solutions to health problems affecting our region. In Far North Queensland (FNQ), clinical trials have paved the way in allowing our patients to access the latest in drug development, making Cairns Hospital the northern referral centre for clinical trials on an international and national level.
Within the CHHHS there is 9 Hospitals, 10 Community Health Centres, 10 Primary Health Care Centres and 3 residential mental health facilities.

Lead researchers
- Dr Megan Lyle is an oncologist and leading international clinical trialist in Cairns, working on multiple novel clinical trials in cancer care.
- Dr Joshua Hanson and Dr Simon Smith lead multiple research project in the fields of infectious disease and neglected tropical disease, with an emphasis on research capacity building.
- Prof Eddy Strivens is a Geriatrician and leads the Health Ageing Research Team (HART), an intra-professional team of clinician researchers and researchers, both First Nation and non-indigenous team members in Cairns, Brisbane and the Torres Strait.

- Active Clinical Trial Unit with 63 trials with 1774 participants across, cardiology, cancer care, renal, respiratory, paediatrics and diabetes.
- Ongoing clinician researcher partnerships such as James Cook University and the Healthy Aged Research Team (HART) with over 8 years of continuous NHMRC/MRFF funding
