The Smithsonian Institution
The Queensland–Smithsonian and Cooper Hewitt Fellowship Programs have been under review in light of future Queensland Government priorities. This review process is still ongoing and, as a result, the programs are currently paused, with no call for applications planned for the foreseeable future. Should this situation change, the program will be promoted through the usual channels.
Queensland has a longstanding and very productive research relationship with the Smithsonian Institution—the world’s largest museum and research complex.

Fellowships
The programs enable an exchange of skills and knowledge between Queensland and the United States of America, and enhanced our science, educational and cultural capabilities, helping advance our knowledge and skills across a diverse range of fields including:
- natural and cultural heritage
- environmental, social and earth sciences
- museums services and collection management
- the arts, education and design.
The Fellowship programs are designed to address areas of mutual interest between Queensland and the Smithsonian Institution. Since 2001, 64 Queensland-Smithsonian Fellows and 14 Queensland-Cooper Hewitt Fellows have been funded to visit the United States and/or Panama and collaborate with the Smithsonian Institution on projects of mutual interest and benefit.

Other fellowship opportunities
The Smithsonian Institution offers in-resident opportunities for independent research or study related to Smithsonian collections, facilities, and/or research interests of the Institution and its staff. Applications are welcome from around the world and are made directly to the Smithsonian Institution.
These fellowships offered by the Smithsonian are aimed at graduate students, predoctoral, senior and post-doctoral researchers.
- Length of terms are for a minimum of three months and maximum of 12 months, come with a stipend, assistance with travel and may also include a research allowance.
